Am 07. Mai 2024 fand eine faszinierende Veranstaltung der Reihe "Life Sciences Innovations im Rheinland" statt. Veranstaltet vom Netzwerk BioCologne und LifeScienceNet Düsseldorf im RTZ Köln.Unter dem Motto: "New Kids on the Block" bot sich eine einzigartige Gelegenheit, direkte Einblicke in die neuesten Technologien und Forschungen zu erhalten. Es kamen kluge Köpfe aus der Startup-Branche zusammen, um über Innovationen und zukunftsweisende Entwicklungen zu diskutieren.Die Veranstaltung begann mit einem Vortrag von Tilmann Spitz von goatAM GmbH über den 3D-Druck von Medikamenten und wie dies die Präzisionsmedizin neu definiert.Es folgte eine fesselnde Präsentation von Carlotta Altringer von VitrofluidiX, die über die Organ-on-a-Chip-Technologie sprach, eine Plattform, die das Potenzial hat, die Forschung an Miniorganen revolutionär zu verändern.‍Kristina Bartmann von DNTOX GmbH stellte ein Verfahren für bioanalytisches Testen von Wirkstoffen ganz ohne Tierversuche vor.Roman Thomas von DISCO Pharmaceuticals GmbH erörterte die Bedeutung des Surfaceome und dessen Potenzial für Krebstherapien. Diese bahnbrechenden Ansätze könnten eine neue Ära der Krebsbehandlung einläuten.Abschließend fand eine lebhafte Podiumsdiskussion von erfahrenden Business Ownern statt, in der die Teilnehmer ihre Erfahrungen reflektierten und neue Chancen in der HealthTech- und Life-Sciences-Branche diskutierten. Es war faszinierend den Rednern zu folgen, die es alle sehr gut verstanden, die zahlreichen Gäste in die hochkomplexen Thematiken einzuführen.

Presentation of the Innovation Prize
On March 7, our third community event in the Bridges series took place at RTZ Cologne in the “MachBar” lounge, which is intended to bring users of our two locations BioCampus Cologne and RTZ Cologne closer together. Under the name “BRIDGESIII INTERACT: connect, converse, collaborate”, a platform was created that promotes cooperation between companies from both locations. The event began at 16:00 with a warm welcome and welcome by Yvonne Patschke. Markus Goldbach, CEO of Mentafy, was the first keynote speaker to start with his Presentation on the development of AI learning tools for the education sector. At the same time, he highlighted the benefits and risks of AI in education. Both subsequent keynotes focused on the development and provision of reference substances for the detection of pollutants in food packaging. Andre Stratmann, founder and only employee of ASAS Laboratory, explained the challenges he faces with his work with the otherwise so commercially unavailable 'reference products'. He explained well why his niche of rubber polymer analysis standards is so important for the market. Dr. Martin Lommatzsch from Laboratory Lommatzsch& Säger GmbH was the next keynote speaker. He presented a wide range of services, such as classic MOSH/MOAH analysis via HPLC-GC-FID; also for food packaging. He also shared experiences from his analyses, keyword: Which products might be better off avoiding. Last but not least, Dr. Benedikt C. Bürfent from BioEcho and Dr. Reza Esmaillie and Dr. Robin Bayer from Detechgene presented their companies. BioEcho develops breakthrough technologies, products and workflows in the processing of nucleic acids. In downstream processes, these significantly increase throughput capacity more easily and at the same time deliver reliable results. Detechgene specializes in simple and precise detection of pathogens. The tests developed are just as precise as a PCR analysis carried out in the laboratory. The DetechStamp and DetechChip products make it possible to use the tests all over the world and to detect a wide variety of pathogens. BioEcho and Detechgene are working on a joint research project. Desired synergies — perfectly complemented and in the immediate vicinity at BioCampus Cologne. The event attracted almost 30 people from both locations, creating an intimate and interactive atmosphere. There was a relaxed and interested atmosphere during the lectures, which was further reinforced by the content presented. The open and open-minded atmosphere was particularly pleasant during the subsequent get-together, which offered finger food, drinks and relaxed music. Overall, “BRIDGES III Interact:connect, converse, collaborate” was a successful event that strengthened the community of the community and at the same time presented opportunities for collaboration and innovation. The relaxed and inviting atmosphere helped participants explore potential partnerships. The series will continue with BRIDGES IV on BioCampus in May. ‍
BRIDGES III INTERACT: connect, converse, collaborate
Hagen Campus — a location for innovation and technology for more than 100 years ‍ History ‍ Gottfried Hagen built batteries for the automotive industry in his factory over a hundred years ago. The Hagen company went bankrupt in 1983. Some of the existing buildings were rented out to smaller companies and artists, a hall was used as a mosque. In 1987, LEG (state development company) acquired the site with 46 buildings (2 of which are listed buildings) and 53 rental agreements. In 1991, in spring, LEG presented its final usage concept, which only provided for the preservation of a group of six buildings or listed parts of buildings on Rolshover Street. The majority of the existing building is demolished and the gained land made available for new buildings In 1995, all demolition work was completed and renovation work began on the old buildings. The RTZ groundbreaking ceremony in July 1997 was the time. Construction began on the 'Hagen Campus for the Technology and Start-Up Center (RTZ) on the right bank of the Rhine and then the Biofactory. The patron table for RTZ was heralded in a top-class manner. In good weather, good humor, Kölsch “un lecker Mädche”, the event was duly celebrated in the Humboldt-Gremberg district. On May 20, 1999, the Rechtsrheinische Technologie- und Gründerzentrum Köln GmbH opened its doors. The management of the center was assigned to Dr. Heinz Bettmann as managing director and to Mr. Norbert Günnewig (Sparkasse Köln) as additional managing director. ‍ The role of RTZ and value for Cologne's economyAt the right bank of the Rhine Technology and Founder Center Cologne GmbH, known as RTZ for short, will give young founders time and space to (further) develop their ideas with innovative ideas from the life science and/or innovative technology scene. The founders will find their space on a total of 4,000 square meters of office and laboratory space. In addition to office and laboratory space, RTZ offers its tenants fully equipped seminar and meeting rooms, business support and an extensive network. The incubator supports and accompanies people who want to start up in implementing their ideas. 40 founding companies currently form a vital community. ‍ The center acts as a platform for innovation and promotes the exchange of knowledge and ideas between various players from business and academia. It provides support in the form of consulting services, networking events and training for companies that want to develop and scale their technology-based business models. RTZ contributes to strengthening Cologne as a technology location by creating an environment in which companies can grow and flourish, while promoting regional economic development. The strategic location and transport links to major motorways, infrastructure facilities and the proximity to Cologne/Bonn Airport are of great Advantage.Development of RTZ Köln GmbHContrary to all expectations, the Technology and Start-Up Center developed brilliantly. After 10 years, it was possible to demonstrate a track record that no one would have dared to dream of when it was founded. The positive development of the company has continued on its path in the following years.May 2019 — 20th anniversary celebration of RTZ Köln GmbH — Greetings On the occasion of RTZ's 20th anniversary in Cologne, 200 guests gathered to celebrate, discuss and network together. The mayor's words of praise for the work of the RTZ were honored, as was the memory of Wolfgang Clement, who broke ground for the construction of the RTZ. Dr. Michael Henze conveyed warm greetings from Minister Pinkwart, while Konrad Beikircher spoke his “greeting” in his characteristic way. RTZ would once again like to thank all participants, panelists, Tom Hegermann for his excellent presentation and Daniel Opoku for the first-class photos. This event marked a special edition of the “Kalker Round Table”, a morning meeting at half past nine in Kalk, which successfully promotes exchange between people. The event was moderated by Tom Hegermann. At the anniversary of the RTZ, the Lord Mayor did not miss the opportunity to highlight the success story of the incubator and its significance for Cologne as a business location. “Cologne is an important location for industry and also for start-up companies. Today, digitization is an extremely important factor for the future orientation of industry. And so it is almost logical that the Digital Hub Cologne is also based in RTZ.” ‍ Heinz Bettmann welcomed numerous guests to the RTZ anniversary in Cologne who wanted to share their experiences and memories from “20 years of RTZ.” Many of them have accompanied RTZ over the years and are now active in the area of startups and innovations. In a visual presentation, he showed the development of RTZ from the beginning on the former site of the Hagen Battery Factory to the complete repopulation of the “Hagen Campus” with many innovative companies. In doing so, he reflected on structural change and its effects on the economy and life in the region. In the last two decades, RTZ has undergone impressive development: It was the test winner of Stiftung Warentest for start-up consulting, was a founding member of various biotechnology associations and initiated the founder magazine RheinZeiger. Most recently, RTZ published the “Startup Guide Cologne,” which comprehensively presents the city's founder ecosystem. Heinz Bettmann also took stock: In the 20 years, he read business plans for around 375 days, coached founders for almost 3,000 hours, wrote around 250 reports and moderated 50 Kalker round tables. He emphasized that start-up support is hard work.Rheinzeiger — the company's successful magazine, “RheinZeiger”, has also been read by a large number of interested readers since its premiere in January 2003. The free, six-month magazine, which reports on projects, visions, goals and results in and around the start-up scene, is still distributed as an online format by vfw eV (Vereinzur Förderung der rechtsrheinische Werbewirtschaft Köln e.V.). The anniversary in 2019 was also a big farewell party for the now sole managing director of the center. Dr. Heinz Bettmann went into his well-deserved retirement on 31.09.2019 and handed over the business to his successor, André van Hall. ‍ Merging BioCampus Cologne and RTZ CologneIn a decisive step, RTZ and BioCampus Cologne have united in 2019 to create an even more effective platform for research and innovation. This merger marks a milestone in the development of entrepreneurship in Cologne and beyond. The start-up center on the right bank of the Rhine as an incubator for startups and young companies, which focuses on promoting entrepreneurial spirit and offering innovative business ideas a space to develop complements the BioCampus Cologne perfectly. As a center for biotechnology and life science, Caps offers companies in these industries an ideal environment for research, development and collaboration. The combination of these two institutions creates a synergy that enables startups to benefit from RTZ's entrepreneurial resources and network, to develop further and then to be based on the BioCampus as an established company. Mr. van Hall is now managing director of the two sites BioCampus Cologne and RTZ Cologne. Once again, the German Biotechnology Report 2023 was presented at BioCampus Cologne. Manuel Bauer/PhD presented the latest EY report with the guiding principle “Appeal — time to act.” An absolutely exciting presentation with interesting facts about the current and future development of German biotechnology companies. For example, it became known that only 23 biotech companies have been founded in Germany since the Corona pandemic. We are all the more pleased that one of these companies was present at the event on Monday with DNTOX. Interesting discussions and exemplary company presentations by AiCuris Anti-infective Cures AG (spin-off from Bayer) and Resolve BioSciences (spin-off from QIAGEN) enriched the agenda. In addition to culinary delights, the get-together offered a wonderful view of Cologne's skyline from the roof garden — everything for optimal biotech networking. Organized by BioRiver-Life Science im Rheinland e.V. BioCampus Cologne is also happy to host this great event at the next EY Biotech Report.

Die neue Veranstaltungsreihe unserer beiden Standorte BioCampus Cologne und RTZ Köln - ‚BRIDGES‘ – startete am 26. April 2023 erfolgreich im RTZ. Ab 8.15 Uhr traf man sich im Rechtsrheinischen zum Netzwerken mit Frühstück und einem Community-Insight vom Mittelstand-Digital Zentrum Rheinland. Dario Luipers, Leiter des Projektes von der TH, präsentierte die Arbeit und Angebote des Zentrums. Im Anschluss gab es Gelegenheit zu fragen und diskutieren. Um 10.30 Uhr endete die Veranstaltung und die Teilnehmenden kehrten zu ihren Arbeitsplätzen zurück.

Liebe Akteurinnen und Akteure der Life Sciences, Köln und Düsseldorf tun es gemeinsam: Die beiden Netzwerke für Biotechnologie und Life Sciences präsentieren mit einer neuen Veranstaltungsreihe spannende Innovationsthemen aus dem Rheinland. Das erste Meeting beschäftigt sich mit neuen Entwicklungen und innovativen Methoden der Strukturbiologie. Strukturen von Biomolekülen mit atomarer Auflösung ermöglichen ein tiefes Verständnis von molekularen Mechanismen und sind die Voraussetzung für strukturbasierte Wirkstoffentwicklung. Die Kryo-Elektronenmikroskopie(Kryo-EM) hat sich im letzten Jahrzehnt rasant entwickelt und ermöglicht heute die routinemäßige Strukturbestimmung von Proteinen, Viren und Bionanopartikeln. Dabei bietet sie auch Zugang zur Untersuchung von Proteinen, die sich beispielsweise der Kristallisation entziehen oder konformationelle Heterogenitäten besitzen. Mit der technischen Entwicklung hin zu einer Standardmethode gibt es angeschlossen an Forschungseinrichtungen auch im Rheinland zugängliche Kryo-EM Nutzerplattformen. Termin: 3. Together with Bio.NRW.Red, we would like to cordially invite you to the event on the topic of “Environmentally conscious research — sustainability in the (biomedical) laboratory” on Friday, 28.10.2022 here at BioCampusCologne. “Is sustainability even possible in the laboratory? And if so, how can I make my laboratory work more sustainable without jeopardizing the quality, standardization and reproducibility of my test series? ““The event is aimed at interested scientists with laboratory work in the life science sector. The program is suitable both for beginners who have so far had only a few points of contact with the topic of sustainability in the laboratory, and for laboratory workers who are already working intensively on implementing sustainability concepts in the laboratory. The number of participants on site is limited and will be awarded after registration has been received.” Registrations are now open here. “The winner of this year's BioRiver Boost! The competition for biotech and life science founders is called Lumatix Biotech GmbH. With its light-controlled antibody purification, the founding company from Garching near Munich won first place and was thus voted the most promising start-up in 2022. BioThrust and Vivalyx, both based in Aachen, were delighted to take second and third places. On September 29, 2022, the annual European start-up competition BioRiver Boost honored for the ninth time in a row! select the three best young companies. BioCampus was present at the Greener Manufacturing Show as a representative of ChemCologne. It was a pleasure for us to answer exciting questions and have interesting discussions at the ChemCologne joint stand. It was very inspiring to see that the topic of sustainability is also generating ever more innovative ideas as it becomes increasingly relevant in the world! We are grateful for the lively exchange and are looking forward to next year!
2022 Greener Manufacturing Show
We are looking forward to the jury meeting and award ceremony of Germany's successful business plan competition for the medical industry - AXOLOTL - again at the BioCampus Cologne conference level on 24.10.2022. A very special event for all participants and the opportunity to network in the medical and healthcare industry at Cologne as a center of innovation. The aim of the AXOLOTL German MED & HEALTH Business Plan Competition is to put pioneering medical industry ideas with market potential in a promising starting position and to promote the founding and establishment of innovative companies in the medical and health sector. The Tech Tour NRW Green Program was developed to help start-ups in the North Rhine-Westphalia region that develop technical solutions in the areas of environment and sustainability to increase their willingness to invest and build relationships with investors. By participating in a four-month program and a range of online and on-site activities, entrepreneurs get the opportunity to get to know potential strategic partners and investors and connect with corporate investors and venture capitalists. We are pleased that the Tech Tour will finally take place again here at BioCampus Cologne on 28.09.2022. The final event will then be on November 23 and 24, 2022 in Essen with the best 20 companies from the Qualify round. The exciting area of sustainability/sustainability is the focus this time. We were present at this year's German Biotechnology Days from March 28 to 29. These took place once again in Wiesbaden and were a complete success. As in previous years, numerous entrepreneurs, scientists and partners from politics, funding and administration were represented and had the opportunity to exchange ideas. BluCon Biotech GmbH receives one million in funding
After TechTour Sustainability2022 on November 24, TechTour Sustainability2022 ended with an investor breakfast at the BRYCK Tower in Essen. This was preceded by the finale of this leading international startup event at the CCO of Messe Essen the day before. This year, the focus was on sustainability and energy. After 2019, Essen hosted a TechTour finale for the second time. The TechTour brings together startups and investors from all over Europe. Startups have the opportunity to present their business models to over 100 potential investors. The preliminary decisions will take place in various German cities, for example the TechTour NRW Green took place on 28.09.2022 in Cologne at BioCampus Cologne. Highly innovative startups met top-class investors at the final in Essen. With a total of around 300 participants and 15 pitching sessions, where more than 100 startups pitched, the TechTour was a particularly outstanding success this year. 40 NRW startups also took the opportunity to present their business model to over 100 international investors as part of the competition. With b.fab and Frank Kensy, a start-up from RTZ Cologne had also qualified for the final. TechTour is a great event format for startups to introduce themselves to potential investors, to achieve more willingness to invest even among international investors and to network with corporate investors and venture capitalists.

Gründerstipendium.NRW — what does it offer? The Gründerstipendium. NRW from the Ministry of Economics, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (MWIKE) not only provides financial support and individual coaching, but also assistance through network exchange.
